Custom Wardrobe

Prototype Category
FURNITURE

I designed and fabricated my own wardrobe.

The wardrobe is usually a large, tall and visually obstructing element in a bedroom. In a bedroom with limited space, I aimed to make the wardrobe appear as if it were part of the wall, as opposed to an object in front of the wall.

To achieve this I designed the surface of the drawer panels and closet doors to sit flush against one another using “push to open” slides and door mechanisms. I integrated the drawer slides beneath the drawers as opposed to the sides of the drawers to ensure both an elegant opening/ closing function and appearance. The design allowed for both “push to open” and “soft close” effects.

Two full height mirrors are built into the wardrobe doors which open 180 degrees using wide-angle soft closing hinges. This allows the user to view the reflection of their front and back by adjusting the angle of the doors.

The custom wardrobe was handcrafted as two detachable unit for portability and assembly. Cable paths for sensor activated lights and a hair dryer were also pre-cut into the MDF using a drill and scroll saw.

In order to reduce the weight of the MDF, larger panels were assembled using three layers; two 3mm layers on the outside, and a thicker 12mm layer in the middle which is hollowed in a hexagonal beehive structure. This reduces the weight of the wardrobe while also maximising the strength of the larger panels.
